Jade Armour of Immortality–Treasures of China's Han Dynasty

Saint Stephen King (Szent István Király) Museum

Location
Székesfehérvár, Hungary
Duration
01/2024 - 06/2024

The second stop of the exhibition entitled "Treasures of Ancient China – The Age of Jade Emperors," continued to present original ancient Chinese artifacts that reveal everyday life, burial customs, and the world of rulers, while also exploring the nomadic peoples who once lived on China’s borders. Its highlight is the emperor’s funerary jade armor, an extraordinary piece crafted from 1,460 jade plates bound together with golden threads. This exhibition was organized through a collaboration between two Hungarian museums, not only to share costs but also to attract and captivate an even wider Hungarian audience.

The collection includes rare treasures from Shanghai, brought through collaboration with several Chinese museums, as well as special pieces from the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asian Art in Hungary.

At the entrance hall, visitors were greeted by a Magic Wall offering an engaging and interactive introduction to ancient Chinese objects and history.

Design Challenges

The core challenge of this project is how to use a highly visually striking ancient Chinese artifact as a point of entry while clearly explaining the underlying ritual system, concepts of life, and the culture of the era. The project must strike a balance between the artifact’s visual appeal and its historical significance, guiding visitors along a cultural journey that progresses from “seeing the jade armor” to “understanding the Han Dynasty.”

Design Strategy

With the core logic of “From Object to History, From Jade to the Han Dynasty,” the project positions the jade armor as the starting point of the exhibition narrative. The exhibition unfolds around the themes of artifacts, ritual systems, beliefs, and concepts of eternity, beginning with materials and craftsmanship before gradually expanding to explore the Han Dynasty’s social hierarchy, funerary culture, and cosmological imagination.

In terms of spatial expression, the design draws upon the visual language of Han Dynasty artifact patterns and tomb culture. Through the use of key artifacts, graphic systems, multimedia aids, and lighting control, it creates an exhibition atmosphere that combines a sense of solemnity with visual tension.

Project Value

The significance of this project lies in establishing a more accessible pathway for the cross-cultural dissemination of ancient Chinese civilization through a single iconic Han Dynasty artifact. The jade armor is no longer merely a precious object to be viewed; it has become a vital medium for understanding Han Dynasty ritual culture, craftsmanship, and concepts of life, thereby introducing ancient Chinese civilization to Hungarian audiences in a more recognizable and compelling manner.
