The Realm of Masters
Seventy-one works from Budapest trace five centuries of European painting—from Renaissance devotion to the emergence of modern life.
The Realm of Masters brings five centuries of European art into one sweeping exhibition, drawing on major holdings of the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest and the Hungarian National Gallery. Through 71 paintings and object groups, visitors encounter works associated with masters including Titian, El Greco, Courbet, Monet and Renoir. Rather than presenting art history as a succession of national schools, the exhibition follows a more immediate human story: how artists represented faith, power, family, solitude, nature and the body. Sacred images, aristocratic portraits, intimate interiors and modern landscapes reveal changing ways of seeing—and changing ideas about the individual. Conceived as a major international loan exhibition for approximately 1,600 square metres, The Realm of Masters gives host museums a richly accessible journey through European cultural history, anchored by recognisable names and works of exceptional visual presence.
